Thanksgiving is a day where we take a moment and reflect on the year that has past, and recognize all that we have to be thankful for. It is also a holiday known to be all about food which is why I want to share some ideas for staying healthy while still indulging and enjoying the holiday food, family time and football.
Going straight from the dinner table to the couch pretty much guarantees a lazy and lethargic day. Make a point to go outside for some fresh air. How about a family walk or tossing around a football?
Since dinner is such a big meal, many people opt to skip breakfast. This is not a good idea and may result in you overeating because you will be absolutely starving by dinner time. It may not seem like the best idea to eat a big breakfast when you know you have a plate full or turkey ahead of you, but eating something hearty in the morning will help keep your portions smaller later in the day.
You may feel you have to eat everything if you fill up a bigger plate, even if you are already full. Instead, use a smaller plate to help you eat less.
Choose your food wisely. Restricting certain foods is not necessary, just enjoy in moderation. Fill your plate with lean turkey and lots of vegetables. You can have a dessert, just be careful to not overindulge. Choose the foods you enjoy the most.
Water is an appetite suppressant, so make the effort to drink lots of water throughout the day. Drinking ample water can prevent you from sneaking bites of pumpkin pie or turkey as you prepare the meal.
The holiday is all about enjoying good food and good company, so you don’t need to stress. It is not necessary for everything to be absolutely perfect. Relax and enjoy yourself.
